    First Gulf War
    Saddam Hussein, the leader of Iraq, invaded Kuwait for oil. The UN demanded that Iraq leave, so the US led the international Operation Desert Storm to enforce it. Eventually, the Iraqi military retreated from Kuwait.
  • US Involvement in Serbia

    US Involvement in Serbia
    Kosovo had seceded from Serbia in 1991. In 1992, President Bush warned Serbia that aggression in Kosovo would lead to war. NATO eventually bombs Serbia to stop ethnic cleansing of Kosovar Albanians.
  • World Trade Center Bombing

    World Trade Center Bombing
    A bomb exploded in a parking garage of the WTC, killing 6 people and injuring 1,000 more. In March 1994, four Islamic radicals were convicted and imprisoned for participating in the plot.
  • Oklahoma City Bombing

    Oklahoma City Bombing
    An explosive-filled truck was detonated outside of a government building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. McVeigh was sentenced to death, and Nichols was sentenced to a life in prison. 168 people were killed and over 650 others were injured.

    Attack on the USS Cole
    The USS Cole was docked at Yemen to refuel when a large hole was blown in the side if the ship, killing 17 and wounding 38. The perpetrators of the attack were two members of al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden's terrorist network.

    al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden's terrorist group, hijacked two passenger planes to fly into the World Trade Center, one plane into the Pentagon, and another plane into a Pennsylvanian field. Almost 3,000 people died in these attacks

    At this time, Iraq was ruled by the dictator Saddam Hussein. The US and UK forces invaded Iraq. The end of major combat occurred on May 1, 2003. Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death on November 6, 2006.

    In 2009, the US increased the amount of troops in Afghanistan to gradually give responsibility to local forces. The Taliban, an Islamic extremist group,helped by al Qaeda, were defeated. Combat officially ended on December 28, 2014.
