Since the north was a communist backed Nation, and the south was not, America sided with the south in order to bring to an end the Soviet-ruled belligerants of North Korea.

Since 1959, America had supplied money and military advisers to South Vietnam, in attempt to protect them from the communist north. It wasn't until America itself was attacked in 1964 that we deployed 80,000 troops to Vietnam.
