    He gets drafted. While at war he has the death march and gets seperated from the group and is the only one to survive. HE feels guilty about not being with the rest of the men which is why he is so devoted to God.

  • RACHEL IS BORN

    Rachel birth causes Nathan to become angry and distant.

  • The Twins are born (LEAH AND ADAH)

    Adah is handicapped which causes a strain on the family.

  • The Twins are gifted (Leah, Adah, and Rachel)

    Leah and Adah are decided to be gifted while they are in second grade. Adah is surprisingly decided to move into gifted classes instead of special education instead of being with the "ear pulling Crawleys". Rachel is surpassed by her younger sisters

  • The Prices move to the Congo

    They go to the congo to be missionaries. This affects the entire family.

  • Demonstration Garden

    Nathan and Leah make a garden in the Western way, but Mama Tataba fixes it so it will grow the right way. Nathan notices it and goes back fixes it to the Western way again. The rain ruins the garden and they have to replant the African way. The plants they tried to grow were Western plants that won't grow in the soil.

  • Ruth May sees Axelroots diamond

    While on the plane back to Kilanga from the doctor in Stanleyville, Ruth May sees a bag of diamonds in the back of Axelroot's plane and is later threatned by Axelroot to not tell anyone about the diamonds unless she wants her parents to get sick and die.

  • Adah tests fate with a Lion

    Adah and Leah travel to get water. Adah is quickly left behind by Leah who runs ahead. Adah returns home later however the Congolese find footprints from a lion along the path as well as blood. Not knowing who the blood belongs to and seeing the telling marks of Adah in the path they assume she has been eaten by a tiger.

  • Patrice Lumumba comes into power

    Lumumba supports communisim in the Congo and the idea of One Africa, where all of Africa unites. Many congolese natves revolt against the whites as a rebellion against the Belgian government. The fear of communisim spreading to Africa provokes fear in the West.

  • Congolese Independence

  • Nelson comes to help the family(Adah, Ruth May)

    Nelson becomes friends with Ruth May and also helps Adah to learn more about the Congolese culture.

  • Ruth May becomes sick with Malaria

  • The girls must do housework

    Rachel must learn to cook and clean and do other wifely duties

  • Rachel is looked at by Tata Undo

    In order to avoid marrying Tata Undo, Rachel enters into an engagement with Eben Axelroot

  • Leah is given a bow and Arrow by Anatole

    Antatole gives Leah a bow and arrow as a gift. Despite her father's protest, she learns to hunt.

  • Adah over hears a conversation

    Adah hears a conversation late at night that consists of a plan to murder Lumumba.

  • The town of Kilanga is over taken by ants

  • Lumumba is killed
