School. Lake District. Separation with his sister
After his mother's death in 1778 a young boy was sent to school in Hawkshead, a village in England's Lake District. His close friend and literary collaborator, his sister Dorothy was sent to live with reatives in Yorkshire. The siblings were separated for 9 years. -
University. First writing
This year he was enrolled as a member of St. John's College at Cambridge University. There he wrote his first writing, a sonnet in European Magazine -
Graduation. France. Republican movement. Love
He received his bachelor's degree from Cambridge university and went to France. There he was fascinated by the Republican movement and there he fell in love with Annette Vallon. This French woman gave birth to their daughter Caroline in 1792. -
Friendship with Colridge. Lyrical Ballads
After they had become close friends with Samuel Taylor Colridge in 1795 they collaborated on a groundbreaking collection of poetry. And they both published Lyrical Ballads. The book that sparked the Romantic Age of English literature. -
Return to the Lake District. The Prelude
The poet and his sister Dorothy moved back to Lake District from Dorset and settled in the village of Grasmere where he lived for the rest of his life. He had begun work on autobiografical poem about his experience in France. He called the unpublished work the "poem to Coleridge"; it was later known as The Prelude. -
Family matters
During his travel to France with his sister he met with his daughter Caroline for the first time. When he returned to England he married Mary Hutchinson, a schoolmate and a friend. They had five children. -
The publication of Poems in two volumes
The book contains the poem "Ode: Intimitations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood" -
Honorary Degree
He received an honorary degree from Oxford University, to "thunders of applause, repeated over and over" -
Poet Laureate
This year he was named Poet Laureate of England. -
The date of death. Posthumous publication
He died of pleurisy, an inflammation of the lining around the lungs. He was burried in St.Oswald's Church in Grasmere. A few months later his wife published the Prelude, that is considered to be a masterpiece now.
