Plate Tectonics Theory

  • Abraham Ortelius

    Abraham Ortelius
In his time period, he found that the continents drifted. This was because when he studied the world's continents, he noticed that they could fit like puzzle pieces. And I believe no one believes his theory because of how early his discovery was taken.
  • Alfred Wegener

    Alfred Wegener
He proposed that the continents were once compressed into one super continent called Pangaea, and that over time they spread out in a continental drift. This was because he also thought that the continents could fit like puzzle pieces. At the time, Alfred did not have much proof so many people disagreed with his idea.
  • Arthur Holmes

    Arthur Holmes
Proposed that the Earth's mantles contained convection cells that dissipated radioactive heat and moved the crust at the surface. He also developed a new method of radioactive dating to estimate the age of Earth. It is about 1.6 billion years old. People agreed with his theory because it made contributions to Wegener's idea.
  • Harry Hess

    Harry Hess
He was considered to be one of the "Founding Fathers'' of the theory of plate tectonics. He proposed the idea of the sea floor being able to spread. He also published "The History Of Ocean Basins". People and scientists at the time accepted his idea because of its relation to the continental drift theory.
  • Lawrence Morley

    Lawrence Morley
He studied the magnetic properties of ocean crust and their effect on plate tectonics. He presented the idea that there was a magnetic pattern of igneous rock on the ocean floor. People agreeed because it related to the theory of plate tectonics.
  • Frederick J. Vine

    Frederick J. Vine
He made key contributions to the theory of Plate tectonics, helping to show that the sea floor spreads from mid ocean ridges with a symmetrical pattern of magnetic reversals in the basalt rocks on either side. He knew this because of the tools and studies he used. People in his time agreeed with his theory because it related to the continental drift and sea floor spread theory.
  • Allan B. Cox

    Allan B. Cox
He worked on dating geomagnetic reversals by creating a schedule, a tool he used. People agreed with his work and progress because it was kind of like an update to the sea floor spread theory.
  • Drummond Hoyle Matthews

    Drummond Hoyle Matthews
He also was a key contributor to the theory of plate tectonics. Both Matthews and Vine demonstrated variations in the magnetic properties of crystal material forming the ocean floor were consistent with Harry Hess's theory.
