One of the many accomplishments of Pierre Duhem includes positivism. His discovery is not given an exact date other than it occurred in the late 19th century. He believed physical theory is separate from metaphysics. A catholic engineer by the name of Eugene Vicaire disagreed with Duhem's discovery claiming that separating physics and metaphysics created skepticism. Works Cited

Duhem had an issue with science in Germany. He believed that you should separate personal character and national character. Each individual discovery should not be connected to one another, it should stay separate. Anything that does not continue with previous discoveries, Duhem disagrees with. If anyone is going to discover a theory, it should stay at one and not multiple discoveries. Works Cited

In examining James Clerk Maxwell's cartesian method Duhem had issues with this method. He complained that his method was not organized enough, it does not depend on anything else other than models, and the beliefs are not of those of the past but fairly new. Duhem claims that Maxwell did not really confirm his method. Duhem was so critical of Maxwell that he went on to say that Maxwell's work was on the inverse path. Works Cited

Duhem's thesis was considered very important to the Vienna circle. His beliefs centered around Empiricism. This was the center piece for an Anglo-American by the name of W. V. O. Quine. If you summarize Duhem's thesis, you'll understand that empirical statements are hard to go against and that if you would like to prove one statement you are able to change a different one.
