    Pierre Renoir is born
    Pierre was born on February 25, 1841 in Limoges, France. He was born into a realitively poor family, as his father, Leonard, was a tailor and mother, Marguerite, a seamstress. Shortly after his birth in 1844, his family moved to Paris, France. Later in life, Peirre Auguste Renoir became one of the most recognized impressionists in history.

    "Jane Eyre" was published by Smith, Elder & Co in London, England under the pen name of Currer Bell. It is the story of a young girl living with her aunt and cousins as an orphan. Jane is sent to live in a boarding school where she learns to be a governess and is later employed as one for the mysterious Mr. Rochester. In her time there, she finds herself falling in love with a man she is forbidden to have.

    Pierre Renoir becomes apprenticed at a porcelain factory
    While Pierre was still a young boy in school, his father noticed his great interest and talent in drawing and art. At 13 to 17 years old, he was apprenticed to M. Levy at his porcelain factory painting plates. there, he also took drawing lessons from famous sculpter Callouette. Tha apprenticeship was the first step in Renoir's artist career.

    Pierre Renoir enrolls in the "École des Beaux-Arts" (School of Fine Arts)
    Pierre enrolled and was accepted to Charles Gleyre's class at the École des Beaux Arts in Pairs, France. It was a well-known and private training art school. While studying, Renoir met many famous artists such as Monet, Sisley, and Bazille who influenced him and his art throughout his time there.

    Pierre worked with Monet at "La Grenouillère" on the Seine
    Over the summer of 1869, Renoir and Monet painted many times together in Paris, France. Renoir, famous for his figure paintings, inspired Monet to paint some and Monet, famous for his landscapes, inspired Renoir to make a few landscapes. Together, they experimented in light, color, water, and form (or lack there of). The artists' work in this art form at this time was said to be a turning point in impressionism.

    Pierre is drafted
    In 1870, Pierre Auguste Renoir was called in to serve in the military. Durring this time, the Franco-Prussian War had begun and Renoir was needed to train horses. As this was his daily job, Renoir himself did not see the front line, but his good friend from L'École des Beaux Arts was involved. Fredric Bazille was killed durring the war. This had a slight affect on Pierre, as Bazille influenced many of his works in previous years.

    Pierre Renior goes to Italy
    In 1881, Pierre Renoir traveled to Italy for more inspiration for his atwork. There, he saw works of Raphael and Rubens and was inspired to try a more traditional and linear style. Later on, after his trip, Renoir had begun to create more contemporary works rather than his typical timeless ones.

    Pierre Renoir marries
    In 1890, Pierre Renior married Aline Charigot in Paris, France. Aline had perviously modeled for Renoir in the past and the pair already had one child together, Pierre, who was born in 1885. The marriage gave Pierre new inspiration and his artwork was often painted with more distinct strokes durring this time and after.

    Clothing zipper is invented
    In 1891, W. L. Judson invented the clothing zipper, orignially called the 'clasp locker', in the United States. After attmepting to get the idea patented multiple times, the idea was approved in May of 1893. The zipper's first public debut was at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.Later on, in 1913, the desgin was modified and renamed the 'zipper'.

    First modern Olympics
    In 1896 Athens, the first modern Summer Olympics were held. The games were held in Athens due to the fact they were the original birthplace of the games. Events included cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennnis, weightlifting, and wrestling. The Olympic games were a notable success in uniting many nations.

    Pierre Renoir is diagnosed with arthritis
    In 1903, Pierre was diagnosed with rheumatiod arthritis. He settled in Cognes-sur-Mer, France to peacefully live out the end of his life. The disease took over the majority of his life, including his painting, walking, and use of hands. The arthritis made painting nearly impossible but Pierre continued to paint with a brush tied to his hands. He also took up sculpting in his last years but due to the disease, he had to use people taking his orders in place of his hands.

    Earthquake in Southern Calabria and Sciliy
    In 1908, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Italian towns of Calabria and Sciliy. Nearly 150,000 people died in this natural disaster that only lasted aproximately 30 seconds. The earthquake resulted in the construction of stronger and more prepared buldings.

  • Pierre Renoir dies

    Pierre Renoir dies
    Pierre Renoir died at the age of 78 in 1919 of lung congestion, though his arthritis caused him many complications in his later life. He passed away in his final home of Cagnes-sur-Mer, France. Months before his unfortunate death, Renoir was able to travel to Paris one last time to see one of his paintings in the Louvre museum, hangning with other great artists' work. Renoir's work would still be remebered for years after his passing.
