Charlie recognizes Patrick from his shop class and moves to sit beside him during the football game that Friday night. He is sitting with a girl named Sam and they all chat and get to know Charlie and vice versa.

Charlie tells Sam that he likes her. She tells him kindly that they aren't in the same "league" and gives him a hug.

Sam and Patrick invite Charlie to their friends party that night. He is offered a "brownie" which he is unaware that it is spiked with marijuana. He cluelessly eats the brownie and gets high. This is Charlie's first experience with being high. At this party, he also meets two more of Sam and Patricks friends named Mary Elizabeth, and Alice. He also accidentaly finds out Patrick is secretly gay and is secretly dating the football team quarterback.

Charlie joins his friends for their annual Secret Santa party. Charlie recieves dress clothes leading up to a full suit. He also recieves a special gift from Sam: a typewriter.

Charlie is invited to the New Years Eve party at Sam and Patrick's friend's house. He arrives to the party high on LSD and describes how the trees became dragons, and the house became a castle. He passes out and remembers nothing after that.

Charlie and Mary Elizabeth start dating.

While at a get together, Charlie and his friends are playing truth or dare. Patrick dares Charlie to kiss the most beautiful girl in the room. While everyone expects him to kiss Mary Elizabeth because they are dating, He turns to Sam and kisses her, and this sets everything in chaos. Mary Elizabeth runs out of the building crying, with Sam and Alice following her. Charlie is told to stay away for a while, while things cool down.

Patrick and Brad end their secret relationship. When Brad calls Patrick a "faggot" the next day at school, Patrick throws the first punch and they start brawling. When Brad's friends join in, Charlie steps in and takes them all out single-handedly. Charlie gets detention but for the worthy price of saving a friend.

Since all of Charlies friends are in grade 12, they graduate when he finishes grade 9. He gets very bored by having nothing to do while his friends are preparing for graduation, prom, and college.

After Charlie finds out he was molested by his aunt when he was a kid, he enters his hospital and lives there all summer. All his friends and family send him "get well" letters. His family is astonished that the now deceased aunt would ever do that.

Charlie writes what he believes to be his last letter. He thinks he will be too busy next year trying to participate. He thanks the person on the recieving end of the letter for being there when he needed someone to talk to and wishes them a good life.
