    During this time period, many European nations were expanding outside of Europe and establishing colonies around the world. There is even a phrase, "The sun never sets on the British empire" which is talking about how large the empire they had was.

    US gains more territory, tensions rising between North and South. Slavery is big part of these tensions, seeds to Civil War have been planted.

    When the US decides to expand westward. Starts the Mexican war.

    Time period after the Civil War, South is re-admitted to the Union. US attempts to give black americans their civil rights, but it will take some time.

    US increases manufacturing. Moves to more factories and the US becomes a big business nation. Immigration - Between 1870-1920, 20 million European immigrants came into the US. Before 1890 a lot of people came from Western and Northern Europe. After 1890, more immigrants came from Southern and Eastern Europe. Urbanization - People start moving into more cities because of factories becoming popular.

    Returning control of the government to the people, make it easier for people to get into the job market, correct things that are wrong in American Society.

    US wanting to expand its market to foreign country, become a big exporter of goods. Took control of Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and had a big influence over Cuba.
