    Medieval Period

    During this period music was mainly created by the church. In the 1300s a "new art" was created called the ars nova. This period was also the first of minnesang which were love songs formed by Germany around 1100-1300. In the middle of the period 1150 polyphony comes into part which was rhythmic notation in music. The major composers during this period are Guillaume de Machaut, John Dunstable, and Leonel Power.

    Renaissance Period

    During this period the church playing apart in music culture was decreasing with kings and members of the courts being a influence. Music during this time that were famous were chorale and cantus firmus that formed first in 1517 In 1436, composer Guillaume Dufay created "Nuper Rosarum Flores" which was one of the periods earliest pieces. When it came to madrigals during this period around 1500-1540 the first polyphonic secular music were formed by composers Adrian Willaert and Jacob Arcadelt.

    Baroque Period

    This period saw major development in instrumental music and opera. In 1600, was the start of monody which was solo music that composer Guilio Caccini formed. Composers Luigi Rossi and Giacomo in 1650 made major improvisations in bass music. By them joining keyboard music and bass instruments defined the period. But around 1750 opera grew in popularity by composer Arcangelo Corelli which he made it very expressive.

    Classical Period

    This period was the rebirth of music which composers put their personal efforts to make works perfect. Notable composers of this period are Mozart, Paganini, and Beethoven. One of the biggest pieces in 1786 was formed by Mozart called "The marriage of Figaro". In 1813 a idea of artists being spiritual heroes is formed. That changes the idea of music and the the composers making it. One of the biggest performances was in 1801, by Beethoven playing "Symphony #1".

    Early Romantic Period

    This period saw composers become artists due to their working style. Passion was shown into each work with love being a centered message. Character pieces and program music are formed during this early period in 1830-1840. The biggest composer during this period is Franz Schubert who wrote Ava Marie in 1825 which is still a hit today. Other famous composers are Robert Schumann and Giuseppe Verdi who both played major roles in character pieces and opera throughout 1830-1860

    Late Romantic Period

    This period brought new styles to music such as folk music. Symphony Orchestras grew and music all together was being played more but better efficiently. Famous composers during the late romantic period were Antonin Dvorak and Johannes Brahms. Claude Debussy left a impact as his piano works around 1890. In 1916, was the first of its kind of over 1000 instruments and singers played Mahler's "Symphony of a Thousand". That showed how music was increasing and after 1920 it has changed entirely.

    Post "Great War" Years

    This period has had so many music changes throughout each decade. In the 1920's swing music and jazz are on the rise for years until 1950's a new style is born. Rock and Roll changes the way of music with Elvis Presley leading the way. Through the 60's'-70's music is evolving slowly until Pop debuts big in the 1980's. Michael Jackson being the biggest artist during this time leaves a forever impact. But through the 90's to now Rap and Hip Hop is the way of music with artist Drake at the top.
