  • Habeas Corpus

    A writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court, especially to secure the person's release unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention.
  • "Fifty-four Forty or fight!"

    A campaign slogan, used in the election of 1844, that refers to the latitude 54-40, the northern limit of the disputed Oregon territory between America and the British.This was urged it as a solution to the question of slavery in the territories.
  • Mexican War

    In the Mexican War between the United States and Mexico, the United States acquired one half of the Mexican territory. -1846-1848. Texans had created their Lone Star State but now the US wanted it for slavery and expansion.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 was a package of five bills, passed in September 1850, which defused a four-year confrontation between the slave states of the South and the free states of the North regarding the status of territories acquired during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
  • Ostend Manifesto

    A document that stated that America wanted to purchase Cuba from Spain. The document stating that America wanted to purchase Cuba from Spain, and if they didn't want to sell it, they would declare war.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, opening new lands for settlement, and had the effect of repealing the Missouri Compromise of 1820 by allowing white male settlers in those territories to determine through popular sovereignty whether they would allow slavery.
  • Panic of 1857

    A notable sudden collapse in the economy caused by over speculation in railroads and lands, false banking practices, and a break in the flow of European capital to American investments as a result of the Crimean War.
  • Civil War Amendments. (13, 14, & 15 Amendment)
