The Olympics started again in 1896. In 1875 archeologists from Germany excavated the ruins of ancient Olympic stadiums in Greece. After seeing the discoveries, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a french educator, started the modern Olympics. He showed the idea in public in 1892.

The Olympic flag was first flown in 1920. The rings represented each continent and the white background represents peace. Every country's flag that is in the Olympics has at least one of the colors of the Olympic flag: Red, blue, green, yellow, and black.

The first winter Olympics were in Chamonix, France in 1924.

The first Olympics with the Olympic flame was in Berlin in 1936. It was carried by relay to Berlin, all the way from Greece.

Synchronized swimming was added to the Olympoics.

204 nations took part in 2012. There were over 10,000 athletes. There were 41 sports with many events in each of them. There were about 300 events total.
