  • Main Theme of the book

The impact of adults’ hopes and goals lived through their children. The people of Odessa place an unmistaken burden on the shoulders of their sons - to be champions every year so that the adults can take the trophies as their own.
  • Event

The loss to the Carter High School Cowboys in the semi-finals of the State Championship series. This game brings an end to the dream and forever creates in each boy who experienced it the feeling of “what if?” that consumes them even ten years later.
  • Racism

Many examples of racism and gender roles are evident throughout the book. Racism is particularly evident in the rivalry between Carter High School and Permian High School. You can clearly see the predominately African American fan base and players on the Carter team. African American players and coaches are particularly targeted as a result of Permian being a predominately white school.
