Moves to Indonesia

Barack Obama Timeline His mother Ann gets remarried to Lolo Soetoro when Barack is 6 years old. Lolo moves the family to his hometown of Jakarta, Indonesia. Barack Obama Jr. attends Franciscus Assisi Primary School.

Begins College

Barack Obama Timeline He begins is first year of college at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. At the end of his sophomore year he transfers to Columbia University in New York.

First Career

Barack Obama TimelineAfter his college graduation, Barack Obama decides to pursue a career as a community organizer and wants to confront the issues of racial injustice and poverty. He takes a job with a Chicago based group called Developing Communities Project and begins to work on improving conditions in housing projects.
A few of his sucessful projects include public school reform, waste clean up, and establishing a community job training center.

Attends Harvard Law School

Barack Obama Timeline Barack Obama begins studying at Harvard Law School. He is hired as a summer intern in Chicago where he meets Michelle Robinson, a young lawyer. The two of them continue to date even when Barack returns to Harvard in the fall. In 1990, he becomes the first African American president of Harvard Law Review
