The Magna Carta traslates to "the great charter." This document guarunteed citizens of their basic rights of trial by jury and due process of law. It also protected the public from arbitrary acts by the king.

Brawls between citizens and British troops in Boston led to this incident. The public was angry with the presence of these troops and began rioting. Some of them threw snowballs at the troops which sparked the incident. The troops then fired on the revolters killing five of them.

On this day, people in Boston refused to return some shiploads of taxed to back to Britain. Boston citizens then boarded the ships and threw the tea into the harbor.
