Operation: Iraqi Freedom

  • Iraq, Iran, and North Korea announced an Axis of Evil

    President Bush announced that he saw Iraq, Iran and North Korea as an "Axis of Evil." He stated that he WOULD NOT let them threaten the United States or any other nation with nuclear weapons during his first State of the Union Adress. America supported him.
  • First Americans enter Iraq

    A CIA Special Operations (Spec Ops) team entered into Iraq. They were later joined by a Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) team. They began to coordinate a massive assault.
  • Congress approves attack on Iraq

    Congress allowed the United States military to proceed with their attack on Iraq. The first big hurdle was passed. American citizens were dropping in support of the war due to the war in Afghanistan.
  • UN inspectors allowed into Iraq

    United Nations nuclear weapons inspectors are allowed into Iraq for the first time in years. Iraq was no thrilled but it did allow them in. They began the search for WMDs.
  • Iraq claims they have no nuclear weapons

    Until this point, Iraq neither confirmed nor denied nuclear weapon allegations. They finally denied it. The world does not believe them and the search continues.
  • UN Inspectors find warheads

    UN inspectors find 11 undeclared nuclear war heads. Upon investigation, they discovered that each warhead was empty and possed no threat. Support for the war fell even more after this point.
  • Bush is ready to attack

    Bush announced that America is ready to attack. They decided that they will attack with or without United Nations Forces. The attack plan was rushed though and was poorly thought out.
  • UN orders destruction of all of Iraqs long range missiles

    UN orders Iraq to destroy all missiles capable of reaching Israel. They decided that if Iraq could reach Israel, Israel might enter the fighting. They certainly did not want that.
  • Iraq begins the destruction of it's missiles

    Iraq begins destroying all of it's missiles and some of it's missile bases and silos. Iraq is complying with America. Many people think that the operation will be short.
  • Bush orders Hussein out of Iraq

    Bush orders that Saddam Hussein be out of the country in 48 hours. If he complies, there may be peace. If he does not comply, America will enter the country, bringing a full-out war with them.
  • U.S. launch Iraqi Freedom, Hussein launches a televised message, Protest Start

    The United States launches Operation: Iraqi Freedom at 5:30 Baghdad time. Its ultimate goal is to clear out any warheads of nuclear capabilities from the country. Hussein sends out a televised message to the Iraqi people from an unknown location. Global anti-war protests start.
  • Baghdad fighting starts

    The U.S. begins a heavy bombing raid on Baghdad in preperation for the coming attack with infantry units. Ground troops land soon after. Fighting begins in the country.
  • Turkey Sent Troops to Iraq

    Turkey sent troops into Iraq. This was against what the Untied Nations had advised. Turkey, though, saw it as an oppertunity to get military experience.
  • The biggest battle of the war

    In what could be the biggest battle of the war, 150 to 200 Iraqis were killed in the Euphrates Valley east of Najaf. British soldiers turn back an Iraqi counterattack and destroyed 20 armored vehicles. 5 American soldiers were killed.
  • Iraqi Suicide Bomber

    An Iraqi suicide bomber killed four american soldiers. This was the first bombing on American or British forces in Iraq since the invasion began. This was the first sign that the enemy was starting to get weak.
  • U.S. Seizes Airport

    The United States take control of the Baghdad International Airport. This airport plays a key role in reinforcements. This is the first major compound that the U.S. has seized.
  • Baghdad falls to America

    Baghdad falls to the hands of the Americans after many days of fighting for the capital city. This is what many consider the turning point of the war. Now the government has an official place to meet safely and the healing procces can begin.
  • Combat Operations Over

    President Bush announced that all major combat operations in Iraq were over. We will remain there to protect the country and to build a fair, democratic government. Americans want a fast pull-out, though the Iraq people want America to stay there to help protect them.
  • UN Headquarters Bombed

    The United Nations headquarters in Baghdad was bombed and reduced partly to rubble. At least 17 people died in the bombing. After this event, the U.N. began to pull out all potential major target areas to prevent another disaster like this from happening.
  • Hussein Captured

    Saddam Hussein, the criminal mastermind in Iraq, was captured. Shortly after he refused to leave the country, a hunt for him was released. It took nearly a year to find him.
  • No WMDs in Iraq

    The search team specialized in finding WMDs declared that there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. The support for the war went down greatly. The government was wrong about Iraq.
  • Hussein Hung

    Saddam Hussein was hung. A video was taken and it soon went viral. He was sentanced to Death by Hanging for crimes against humanity for the murder of 148 Iraqi Shi'ites.
  • Last Body Identified

    Staff Sgt. Ahmed K. Altaie – the last missing soldier in the war – his remains were positively identified. He left his base, against military code, without telling anyone. It was believed that he was going to visit the family of his wife in Baghdad when he was abducted. The U.S. government put out a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the recovery of Ahmed. His status was changed to KIA on 2/26/2012 making him the last MIA/KIA soldier in the Iraq war.
