Iraq invades the small country of Kuwait. This grabs the US's attention. Saudi Arbabia, who we are freindly with and who we depend on for much of our oil, is near by. They could be next to be invaded and that could effect the US.

Despite the UN's plea to withdraw from Kuwait, Iraq stays and quickly annexes Kuwait. Leader of Iraq Suddam Hussien is calling all the shots.

President George H. Bush authorized a call up of reserves. This indicates the US is ready and preparing for war.

UN Security Council authorizes force if Iraq doesn't withdraw from Kuwait by midnight on January 15.

Iraq doesn't give in. The US begins to discuss Operation Desert Storm. US warplanes attack Baghdad, Kuwait and other military targets in Iraq. Marlin Fitzwater announces, "The liberation of Kuwait has begun..."

After another ultimatum to leave Kuwait is ignored, ground troops move in. Ground war begins with Marines, Army and Arab forces moving into Iraq and Kuwait.

Iraq ignites many Kuwait oil wells, destroying 75% of their oil reserves. This enrages the US and is what we didn't want to happen.

President Bush orders a cease fire.

Iraq formally accepts the cease fire.

US troops go home. Operation Desert Storm is offically over. A nice short operation that ends in a success for the US. Moral at home stays high.
