One of the competitors was Athens, Greece, which they beat in the final round of voting. Preparations for the Olympics began immediately, and spent $5.14 billion. There was over two million visitors and approximately 3.5 billion people around the world watched the games on television.

    The Beijing Olympics opening ceremony started 8:00pm at the Beijing National Stadium. The ceremony was co-directed by a Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou. A Chinese choreographer Zhang Jigang and featured a cast of over 15,000 performers. The ceremony lasted over four hours.
