George and Lennie arrive at the ranch and meet the boss, Candy, Curley, Curley's wife, Slim, and the other ranch workers.

Curley is intimidated by Lennie so he picks a fight. Lennie does not know his own strength and ends up breaking Curley's hand out of self-defense.

After much debating with Slim and the other ranchers, Candy finally allows Carlson to kill his dog. The dog is old and stinks and it is his time to be put down. Candy is very upset because his dog was his one true companion.

After having a long conversation with Curley's wife, Lennie starts to feel her hair. He strokes it too hard and she gets angry, which puts Lennie in a panic. After a struggle between the two characters, Lennie ends up accidently killing her by breaking her neck.

Once George realizes what has happened, he tries to find Lennie before the others can. He saves Lennie from being murdered by Curley by killing Lennie himself.
