Mawi, his brother, and friends decide to steal a parking meter that they had knocked loose from the ground. The police found them and they ran all the way home. They were scared.

Mawi and his brother Tewolde went to the library and encountered a homeless man outside. They offered him their ham sandwiches even though they did not have much themselves.

Before Tewolde could continue his cleaning business or finish High School, he was killed by a drunk driver.

When there were guests over, the mother would make this type of coffee. Then the adults got together and talked about the past and the hardships they faced before coming to America. The kids would listen in from the other room. They were not told much about the time before they came to America.
