    On this day, the US and Iraqi government signed the US-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement promising that the US military will withdraw from Iraqi cities by June 30th, 2009 and complete withdrawal will be done by the end of 2011. The Iraq War started back in 2003 with one reason being that Saddam Hussein had nuclear weapons. After his Hussein's removal from power, what came after was not expected. A civil war with the Sunni and Shitte occured and the US try to contain the situation, but failed.

    Since then, efforts to contain the civil war between the Shittes and Sunnis have remained ongoing. Obama's decision during his campaign for president was to help start the withdrawal of US troops. How this relates to his duty is presidenr was due to US pressure to bring the troops home. However, the promise was halted due to a new launched operation by 2010.

    A partial withdrawal was done in this day with the last combat brigade being withdrawed from Iraq. Obama meanwhile launched a new operation called New Dawn in an effort to help train Iraqi forces after full withdrawal which happened by the end of 2011. After the withdrawal, attacks increased more than ever which is still ongoing. On a positive note, the soldiers who served in Iraq are now back home safe and sound. The consequences of these actions, however, will come back to haunt Obama as ISIS.

    On May 2, 2011, Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is killed by U.S. Special Forces during an early morning raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A group of 25 Navy seals raid the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The group arrives outside the compound in two blackhawk helicopters. This operations took 40 minutes total. Bin Laden is killed by a gunshot wound to the head above the left eye. Three men, including a son of Bin Laden, are killed as well as one woman.

    Back in 2013, Obama praised the plan for Pentagon to lift the ban of not allowing women to serve in combat roles. This relates to him since this has been a pressing issue to push for more gender equality in the military. While this plan has been praised, there are still a few concerns over how the physical and mental health of women will be affected. Another issue is due to a scenario of a romantic relationship with another soldier due to how severe the effects can be. This needs to be fix.

    On June 30th, 2013, a US Michagan born Nicole Mansfield was the first American citizen to have been killed. She was not the only one to join in on the struggles as the war attracted more foreign rebels from other countries. Most of the rebels have come from other Middle Eastern countires while others hail from Russia and other Western countries such as the UK. One such foreign faction who has also joined in the war hail from East Turkestan, a part of China.

Tensions between the Free Syrian Army and ISIS had been high since ISIS attacked anc captured an FSA captured city. Since then, ISIS had made advances in capturing cities and on February 4, 2014, Al Qaeda was reported to having disavowed ISIS to distance themselves. From there, other revel groups have clashes with the group. It wasn't until June 2014 when ISIS moved into Iraq.

    On this very day, the US Army annoucned that 33,000 positions were now opened to women. These positions were closed to them due to them being direct combat positions. Women in the military has a history that extends over 400 years into the past. From WW! to current day, there is no doubt that women have changed the way we view modern warfare. In fact, the only country to have a mandatory draft for single and married women without kids is Israel.

    Despite all the oppurtunities being given to military women now, there are women who oppose the idea of giving women combat roles. One such example is Captain Katie Petronio who was inadvertenly drawn into combat during her two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her criticisms focused on is that the demand for more combat role was pushed by civilian activists rather than the military, gender differences focused mental and physical health, and questions on what women would pursue a combat career.

    On this day, a military intervention was launched against ISIS which would then lead to the American-led coalition intervention in September. Despite the help from United States ground forces during this time, Obama has said there would be no ground war involving the US. On July 4th, 2014, a rescue mission was launched to secure hostages held by ISIS. Unfortunately, the operation was a failure and it resulted in the deaths of two journalists and an aid worker.
  • Current Situation

    Current Situation
    Since a few days ago, an American-led coalition intervention has been launched. Obama's current plan is to arm the rebels in order to help with the fight against ISIS. This relates to him since the US has led a military intervention since June, done surveilance flights in Syria, and is involved in an air campaign. This action has been criticized due to some rebels being Islamist radicals and arming them could be dangerous.
