After the death of leader Kiyomori, the Taira and Minamoto clans both wanted supremacy. So they fought for 5 years. Minamoto won the War and then ended the Taira supremacy. Minamoto Yoritomo became the leader and also eliminated any potential enemies and then made a new government in Kamakura.

The Mongol's first attempt to invade Japan didn´t go so well.
It was the largest sea invasion for 663 years with over 4,000 ships and 140,000 soldiers. You think the Mongols would have won but they didn't. With a big storm and the Japanese fire boats which set the Mongal boats on fire a ton of their ships sunk and were found centuries later. -
The onin war was a civil war that had 2 samurais fighting. The war was mostly within the city of Kyoto but some of the fighting spread to the neighboring provinces. Ashikaga dynasty of shoguns had gone so weak. Then the Samurais had a big dispute to cause the civil war. -
The Sino-Japanese War started when Japan and China didn't agree on interests. Japan won and took Taiwan but Russia, France, and Germany made Japan give it back and other territories. In 1904 the same thing happened and Russia and Japan fought and Japan won while gaining some territory. With Japan winning the war Against Russia they gained some international respect. -
One of the Worst earthquakes ever struck on September, 1st 1923 on the Kanto Plain and also hit Tokyo. It Injured and killed 140,000 people and caused many fires in Tokyo. It was an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. -

Japan decided to capture the oil-rich which had a shortage in Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and to start a war with the US and Great Britain. That would begin Japan's involvement in WW2. In December 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) and other areas in the Pacific. Then in 1942 coutries started to take their area that Japan had back.
