    Integration of Schools is introduced
  • Governor’s Special Advisory Committee on Education Created

    First attempt at stopping true integration.
  • Luther Hodges Elected Governor

    Opposed desegregation
  • Pupil Assignment Act

    Another attempt to delay/stop desegregation
  • Pearsall Plan

    Amendment to the Compulsory School Attendance Law so that students might be excused from attending an integrated public school.
  • Pearsall Plan forced private Indian School to be built

    Due to segregation the Pearsall plan forced American Indians to build their own private school.
  • Federal Civil Rights Act

    outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
  • 1964 Federal Civil Rights Act declared Pearsall Plan unconstitutional

    Although segregation still continued
  • Godwin v. Johnston County Board of Education

    Ruled Pearsall Plan unconstitutional
  • Federal Court Upheld decision that Charlotte Schools must be desegregated

    The United States Supreme Court in 1971 upheld a decision that declared that the Charlotte school system must desegregate, and, if necessary, it must bus students to schools outside their communities to achieve integration.
  • North Carolina Meets Brown v. Board decision
