Elie met Moche the Beadle in 1941. Elie was only 13 when they met. People in Translyvania did not like the poor. Moche was the exception. Everyone loved him and his stories he told. One day foreign jews were expelled. Moche was foreign.

About a year later after Moche had been taken away, Elie saw him on a bench in Transylvania. Moche had escaped and he was warning everyone. Nobody listened anymore. They beleived he had went crazy,
“I was saved miraculously” “I succeeded in coming back” “I wanted to return to Sighet to describe to you my death so that you might ready yourselves while there is still time” (Wiesel 7). -
The people of Translyvania were told Hitler was no harm. He wouldn't mess with them. He would be defeated soon. Freimark, Richard. Elie and his town were told Germany would be defeated.

German troops were on Hungarian territory with the goverment's approval.That is when people began to worry.

Germany army vehicles appeared on the streets. German soldiers were not mean but polite but kept distance from Jews. Wiesel says "German soldiers-with their steel helmets and their death's-head emblem" (9).

Germans arrested the leaders of the Jewish community.Elie Wiesel said "From that moment on, everything happened very quickly" (10).

Two ghettos were created in Sighet. A large one that was located in the center of town and a small one on the outskirts of town. Living quarters in the Theresienstadt ghetto. 1940-1945. Elie started to live in the small ghetto. Elie Wiesel describes the ghetto "One could enter and leave as one pleased" ( 20).

In May 1944 Jews were put on carts of 20 people each. The carts were very crowded and gaurded with one gaurd. If one person went missing all 20 would be shot. There was little food to share. Finally after traveling for so long, the arrived at the Aushwitz. They were all told the conditions were great and families would not be seperated.

It has been 8 days in Auschwitz. Elie Wiesel found his relative Stein.

Elie has been Auschwitz for three weeks.

Elie was transported to a new camp called Buna. Elie described the camp as empty and dead.

The Buna factory was being bombed. It lasted over an hour.

Summer was coming to an end.

People debated whether to fast or not. Elie did not becuase of his father and his frustration with god.

The Jews were given new suits. Their heads were shaved also.

Winter had arrived. The Jews got there winter clothes that were striped shirts and little heavier. They did not have to work on New years or Christmas.

Elies right foot was swelling from the cold.The doctor decided to operate on it.The operation last 1 hour and he was not put to sleep!

There were rumors in the camp that the battlefront had drawn closer.
