Beautiful Boy Nic Sheff was born on July 20, 1982 at dawn. His parents are Vicki and David Sheff. This was Vicki and David’s first child so they were ready to bring him home, love and care for him as soon as he was born. Nic’s parents got divorced when he was 3 years old. Vicki and David tried to make it work for the sake of Nic, but they finally decided to get divorced. Nic's New Family
A few years later David met a woman named Karen and they got married. Karen and Nic have a great relationship. Karen and Nic love to draw and speak French with each other. They all move to Inverness and Karen and David start a family. Nic loves the area he lives in because of the beach. He is always out in the ocean surfing. He loves living with his dad and Karen. Heading Down a Dark Road
Nic is now in 7th grade. One day Nic gets in the car and David smells cigarette smoke. David questions Nic about it and he lies and said it wasn’t him; that it was his friends. After he says that, he admits he smoked a little too and promises never to do it again. The next week later, David finds a small bag of marijuana in Nic’s bag. Nic Gets Arrested
Nic robs the house of wine, food and cash. Two weeks later, police officers show up at his house and arrest Nic. He was arrested because he did not show up to court after being cited for marijuana possession. David bails him out. Nic keeps doing the wrong thing, yet his parents keep forgiving him because they really want him to get better. -
Nic Goes To College
Nic decides to attend Berkeley College. His parents support his decision so they bring him to college and help him settle in. He is happy at school for a while, but soon after that he says that he is distracted and wants to come back home. David can tell that Nic is back on drugs again and hopes that he can convince Nic to get help again, so he allows him to come back home. -
The Confession
Nic moves back home, but not for long. As soon as he returns home he runs away. He is gone for four days and then he calls David. David goes and gets Nic, and on the car ride home Nic admits he had used meth before. David tells him he need to go to rehab, but Nic is fighting against it and says that he is fine and he learned his lesson. -
Nic Goes to Rehab
Nic goes to rehab for the first time at Ohlhoff in San Francisco. David and Karen bring Nic there and they speak to some counselors. Most of the people David and Karen speak to tell them that 4 weeks is not enough and that Nic is going to need more time in rehab if he is going to recover. Things are finally starting to look bright for Nic. As long as Nic does what he needs to do, he can get through this and live a happy, healthy life again. -
Nic Disappears
After four weeks, Nic says he needs more time in rehab. David, Karen, and Nic decide it is best if Nic moves into the Ohlhoff Halfway House. He moves into the house and things seem to be going great, but right after Nic moves into the halfway house, he vanishes. -
St. Helena Hospital
Nic is sent to a new rehab, St. Helena Hospital. He realizes that he needs to get his life back on track at the hospital, so he stays clean and he graduates from the hospital. Nic asks David if college is still an option for him and David says yes. Nic says that he is ready to go back to school and that he is eager to learn again. Nic decides to go to Hampshire College. After a month of Nic being at Hampshire College, he stops returning David’s phone calls. A professor at the college says that if Nic stays clean that he will help him with his writing. Nic confesses that he has been using the entire time he was home and throughout the semester. Nic robs jasper of his money in his piggy bank. -
Laundry Disaster
One day while Nic is still missing, Karen’s mother, Nancy, is doing laundry. She goes to fold the clothes on the folding bed, but she sees a body there… It’s Nic. Nic gets scared and runs away again. Nancy tried to stop him, but Nic wouldn’t listen. Nancy calls David and lets him know what happened. -
Hazelden
At 5 o’clock on a Sunday morning Nic’s step father calls David and says that Nic has overdosed and he is in critical condition, on life support at the hospital. Nic freaks out and leaves the hospital. He returns to his apartment and agrees to go to a new rehab, Hazelden. He made some amazing friends at Hazelden and he really liked it there. Nothing But Lies
Nic starts dating a girl named Z after he is a year clean. A month after that he stops returning David’s calls and runs away with Z. He is better for a little while, but he relapses again. The Light Is Found
David arranged for Nic to go to a new rehab, but the rehab never approved Nic’s arrival, so he went to the hospital to detox instead. While he is in the hospital Vicki and David look for other rehabs that Nic can go to. They decide on one in New Mexico. David brings Nic to the airport and he flies to New Mexico.
