German Americans of eastern Pennsylvania rose to protest another direct tax. This time the tax was on the land,houses, and slaves.

A new state constitution is adopted. Thomas Mifflin is Pennsylvania’s first governor.

Bill of Rights is finally ratified. On December 15, 1791, Virginia became the 10th of 14 states to approve 10 of the 12 amendments, thus giving the Bill of Rights the two-thirds majority of state ratification necessary to make it legal.

Two rebellions were tied to issues of national power. The whiskey Rebellion shook Pennsylvania’s ideas of government.

At first, there were no political parties in the new country. George Washington was against dividing the country into “fractions,” or parties.

The Treaty of Paris had officially ended the revolutionary war between the United States and Britain. British ships had still continued to harass the American ships on the ocean.

The war was fought in only two places in Pennsylvania. The British blockaded Philadelphia and kept people and goods from moving in and out of ports.

The War dragged on until finally the Americans were able to reach a peace treaty with England. The Treaty of Ghent officially ended the war of 1812.

The Battle of New Orleans was the last major battle of the War of 1812. It happened on January 8, 1815, although it was preceded by smaller skirmishes.
