In this event we will be talking about the great works that Neils Bohr did during his long fulfilled life as a Danish physicist!
-
In 1903 Bohr enrolled into Copenhagen University to start his career in Mathematics, it wasn't until 1905 that he became the winner of an essay competition that was on the properties of surface tension. 6 years later he graduated with his doctorate under the physicist Christian Christiansen! Once he completed this degree he was on his to England to start the journey of getting his post doctorate! -
In the year 1921 Neils Bohr teamed up with the Danish Government to found the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen. It was here that he served as a director until the end of his life. It didn't take long for this institute to become an international focal point for theoretical physicists throughout the 20's & 30's! Fun fact: a wide majority of physisicsts during this period spent ample amount of time there! -
Just a few short years after his studies in England he returned to Copenhagen where he introduced the the idea that Electrons travel in discrete orbits around the atom's nucleus. In addition, he proposed that electrons were able to drop from a higher energy orbit to a lower one, which will emit a photon of discrete energy in the process, which in return became part of the quantum theory. It was largely for this work that Bohr was able to walk away with the Nobel Peace prize in Physics in 1922! -
In the 1950's Neils Bohr was still a force to be reckoned with! Bohr decided to address an "Open Letter" to the United Nations on the issue of -Peaceful use of Nuclear Energy-, which was an issue that Bohr advocated for many years of his life. Unfortunately it wasn't until the late 1950's and the surprise from the Soviets of their independently developed Nuclear weapons that the International Atomic Energy Agency was created. Which wouldn't have been done if it wasn't for Bohr's initial idea.
