Nation Divided

  • Period: to

    Westward Expansion

WE was the movement of Americans to the West trying to colonize the rest of their land & acquiring more. It helped make the USA the size we know it today. This is an example of sectionalism because it created another section for Americans to have pride in. Making the country more divided.
  • 3/5 Compromise

    3/5 Compromise

This comprise made it to where 1 enslaved person is worth 3/5th of a person so 5 enslaved people are worth 3 tax or vote. This is useful when southern states wanted more votes so the more slaves they had the more powerful they could be. This is an example of nationalism because the North and the South made an agreement making the country more of one figure.
  • States Rights

    States Rights

Many Southerners felt that they were being robbed and that the national government has too much power. Because for them to make money they need labor and don't want to pay so that is where slaves come in and the national government wants slavery gone. This is an example of sectionalism because the South does not like what the other governments are doing because they are siding with the North.
  • Period: to

    Underground Railroad

The Underground Rail was not a real railroad just a term it was used for the route that an enslaved person would take to escape. It was quite popular at the time and the South hated it. Around a thousand slaves a year would escape the South to be free. This is an example of sectionalism this is because it is the South and the North are two different entities with the Underground Railroad they are fighting for slaves either to be free or enslaved.
  • Compromise of 1820

    Compromise of 1820

The compromise of made it to where the senate would allow Missouri to go as a slave state. But they would give a state to the north which would be Maine which was a part of Massachusetts. This is an example of nationalism because the nation's senate agreed to make both powers equal because if they didn't add Maine then it would be unfair.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850

In this compromise, California was admitted as a free state. The Senate also allowed popular sovereignty. This gave states the option to vote if they want slavery or not. TX and NM relive state borders and TX gets $10 million. And the fugitive state law is passed and D.C. bans the slave trade. This is an example of nationalism because the nation agreed on terms that helped stabilize the condition of the country as a whole.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act

The act said that even though both states were above the line of the Missouri Compromise. They decided to make in popular sovereignty so that people could vote if they wanted to be a free or slave state. So everyone rushed to vote and it ended up being a slave state. This is an example of sectionalism because the south won and got another slave state making the south more power and even more votes.
  • Harriet Tubman

    Harriet Tubman

Harriet was part of a movement to try and help free enslaved people from the South. She commanded 13 missions and personally freed over 70 slaves. In December of 1860, she led a mission that brought back 7 slaves. This event is an example of sectionalism because she was on the north's side and fought against the South. Making it more known that it was North vs South.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation

The Emancipation Proclamation is a law freeing enslaved people in the U.S.A. It was signed by Abraham Lincon in January 1st, 1863. Although it was signed the South did not belive that the North had any control over them and did not free all slaves until 1865. And that is when the war ended. I think that this is Nationalism because It brought both sides together because they eventually both agreed on freeing slaves.
