The earliest experience with reading that I have is listening to my mom read for me. I have always enjoyed listening to books more because I find it easier to focus.

I used to love reading different picture books so my parents would take me to library every month to pick out a stack of ew books to read together. Stellaluna used to be one of my favorites.

In kindergarten I learned the alphabet and how to sound out the letters. We had worksheets and videos we could sing along to. I enjoyed the videos and we would often be able to take them home to watch.

In school we would have a list of "sight words" that we had to practice throughout the school year and we had to know how to spell, and read them by the end of the year. Every month, the teacher would pull us out of a class assignment to test us using specific books.
-
We would have time designated for independent reading in school for 30 minutes to an hour
-
We would choose books chapter books according to our reading level. We would read them at school and at home, and later we would take tests on the content. The more tests we passed and books , our level would go up and we would get closer to a reward.
-
A group of students would be pulled out of class a couple times a week to be in a reading circle with a teacher. We would read stories and talk about themes or further analyze the story.
-
In middle school and high school we would be assigned different books to read and write about. We wouldn't really discuss the book as a class, this was more of an independent assignment. The Outsiders, was one of my favorite books I read during this time.

During high school I began to be interested in reading poetry and practice writing it as well. Maya Angelou was one of my favorite poets. This is actually how I learned to make annotations in books because it wasn't really something we did during school.

In college I have read long articles, plays, short stories, textbooks. A lot of this reading is done as research and to gather information, as well as for writing and learning to interpret that information in my own words. I struggled at first with the extensive amount of reading we were required because during high school we were only required to do very limited reading and we didn't usually read a lot of articles.
