    The first English settlers came to Canada in the 1830's and settled in Upper Canada. They had to leave England becasue the old political system was begging to change so they saw Canada as a place where they could continue their old way of life by profiting off the land.

    My great great great grandfather was the first family member who immigrated to Canada. He decided to emigrate from Scotland because there was a famine in the British Isles and the Canadian government was offering land for people to settle and farm.

    Once he arrived in Canada he travelled to Gueplh, Ontario and bought 100 acres of land for $320 where he had to clear the land and build his own log cabin. He stayed there for 8 years until the death of his mother, and moved shortly after.

    The second English settlers came to Canda in the 1870's and settled in British Columbia. Young, single men and distressed or widowed women left England becasue they were unable to have a good life becasue of where they came from or a mistake they made in the past and they saw Canada as a place where they could start over.

    Robert Wilson Senior and Hellen Hunter had their first child Robert Junior on November 17th, 1877. They had other children after him, but he was the first "Canadian" child in my family.

    World War II

    My great grandfather had a farm during the timespan of World War II. He had to stay on the homefront producing food for Ontario, and since many men were off to war he had immigrants helping to work the farm. One farm hand that was hired had been in a concentration camp and finally escaped on his 3rd attempt. He had no front teeth becasue the German's kicked them out, but my great grandma and papa took his to the dentist to get a plate with 8 teeth.

    Robert Junior and Florence got their first car in the 1940's, but it was not able to be driven in poor weather conditions, such as the winters when there was deep deep snow. They would have to travel in a cutter that was pulled by a horse.

    Many homes did not have the indoor plumbing unti later on in the 1900's like my family. Even when they got it, it was nothing like the type of plumbing we have today that hooks up to our washing machines, dishwashers, showers, etc. becasue they did not have any of that in the 1940's.
