    In Louisbille, KY, doctors performed the first human hand transplant in the United States. They replaced the hand of a man from New Jersey with the hand from a deceased organ donor. Significance: This is significant because it was a new step in medical technology that would increase the well being of many U.S. amputees and would pave the road for other medical advancements.

    U.S. Presidential election closest in decades; Bush's slim lead in florida leads to automatic recount. Republicans attempt to block manual recount sought by Democrats. Supreme court rules handcount may continue. Supreme Court orders a halt to recount. Final votes are 5-4 in Bush's favor.

    Terrorists attack the United States, hitting the Pentagon and the Twin Towers with rogue airplanes. The fourth plane crashes outside of Pittsburgh.Thousands were injured and killed, Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda behind the attacks. Significance: This attack will be remembered throughout history as 9/11. It caused the nation as a whole to unite in mourning of their dead brothers and sisters, and would be the basis for the ongoing series of wars in the middle east.

    Snipers prey upon DC suburbs. Police arrest two suspected snipers, John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo.

    President Bush signs $87.5 billion emergency package for post-war Iraq reconstruction; this supplements $79 billion approved in April.

    Gay marriage legalized in the state of Massachusetts. Significance: This begins the 21st century human rights movement. In years to come, gay couples will be given many more rights in many other cities, and receive more of the freedoms that they deserve.

    Hurricane Katrina slams the gulf coast wreaking havoc and causing widespread devastation, injury, and loss of life. Over 1000 left dead, and millions homeless. Significance: This tragedy affected not only people along the gulf coast but people all over America. Refugees had to move to cities all over the U.S. People with family members in the hardest hit areas experienced deep grief and loss, but perhaps worst of all, the government responded slowly and ineffieciently.

    Senator Barack Obama was the first African American elected as President of the United States. Significance: Obama represents change in society where prejudice against other humans is less of a barrier to meet your goals. Perhaps he will inspire other people to follow their dreams no matter the prejudice they may receive.

    President Obama announces that the U.S. military will be sending an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan. This will bring the total number of American troops in Afghanistan to 100,000.

    The percentage of Americans living in poverty reached its highest in 15 years. U.S. is experiencing worst economic period since Great Depression.

    Catagory 3 hurricane Irene moves up the east coast at least 44 killed in 13 states, damage estemated at $7 billion.

    Huricane Sandy hits Florida, the storm grows as it blows through the east coast growing to 1000 miles in diameter, october 29th Hurricane Sandy hits New Jersey, New York and Conneticut. Over all Hurricane Sandy caused an estimated 132 deaths and $82 billion in damages.
