A mentally disabled man named Charlie has been told by his doctor to write his thoughts down in a journal every day. "Dr. Strauss says I shud rite down what I think and evrey thing that happins from now on." (371)
  • Progress Report 2

" I had a test today. I think I failed it. and I think that maybe they wont use me." (371) Charlie is anxious about the results of his test. Though there are no details at this point, I get the feeling that this is relatively important.
  • Progress Report 4

Charlie is very excited that he has passed the test and is going to be used in some kind of experiment. He was selected due to his low IQ (68) and his high motovation. "Their going to use me! Im so excite I can hardly write." (374)
  • Progress Report 5

In this entry, we find out that Charlie has been selected for an operation that could improve his intellegence. The operation has been tested on a mouse named Algernon and his intellegence has improved dramatically. "If the operashun works Ill show that mouse I can be as smart as he is. Maybe smarter." (375)
  • Progress Report 6

Charlie completed the operation. Though he is not more intellgant immediately, the doctors promised him that he will become much smarter. "The operashun dint hurt. He did it while I was sleeping." (377)
  • Progress Report 10

Charlie defeated Algernon (the rat test subject) in a contest for the first time. The doctors believe the operation is working very well because Charlie has gotten much brighter. "I beat Algernon! I dint even know I beat him until Burt the tester told me." (379)
  • Charlie Gets A Bonus

Due to his witty idea, Charlie saved the factory at which he works a lot of money. Therefore, Charlie recieved a bonus of twenty five dollars. His intellegence is rapidly improving as he soaks up facts like a sponge. "Mr. Donnegan says it will save him ten thousand dollars a year in labor and increased production. He gave me a twenty five dollar bonus." (386)
  • Charlie Quits His Job

  • Algernon's Condition Is Getting Worse

"And when I took him out of the cage, he snapped and bit me...He was unusually disturdbed and vicious." (393) Everyone is concerned about what this may mean for Charlie who was put under the same experiment Algernon had completed.
  • Charlie Publishes Theory

"Under seperate cover I am sending you a copy of my report entiled, "The Algernon-Gordon effect. A study of structure and function of increased intelligence." (395) This is when Charlie predicts his own death.
