At first montreal didn't want to be part of the olympics and they never wanted a stadium so big. And also It would cost alot of money that they didn't have at the time. The construstion of the olympics stadium would cost around 1.49 Billion dollars that montreal doesn't have. And so Montreal was in debt till 2006 which was when the government thought it would be a good idea to charge extra taxes on tabacco and so in 2006 montreal became debt free once again.

Montreal now is very successful and PM Trudeau was very impressed that montreal can think of raising the taxes on tobacco to get out of debt.

On this Day, Montreal celebrates that they are now finially debt free once again. The reason why they were debt free is because the olympics foundation wanted to host the next olympics in montreal and so the construstion process cost around 3.1 Billion dollars.
