    Ronald Reagan, the president of the United States, was shot and injured by John Hinckley Jr. in Washington, D.C. on March 30, 1981, as he was making his way back to his limousine following a speech at the Washington Hilton. Instigated by a delusional urge to try to impress actress Jodie Foster, Hinckley made the decision to try to murder Reagan after reading in the papers that the president would be at the hotel that day.

  • Economic Recovery Tax Act

    This entry can be classified as economic. Reagan signed an act in 1981 called the Economic Recovery Tax Act that contained tax and spending cuts. It was implemented to lower taxes and boost the economy. 25% cut in individual marginal tax rates, phased up over three years.

    Young homosexual men in big cities, particularly San Francisco and New York, were getting Kaposi's sarcoma diagnoses and subsequently passing away from it. The condition was rapidly referred to as "gay cancer" since it affected nearly entirely male homosexuals. As a result, a volunteer organization group was established that ran a hotline for information, offered counseling and legal support, and raised money for people with HIV/AIDS.

    A group made up of notable Washington politicians' wives from both parties, notably Susan Baker, the spouse of Reagan's treasury secretary James Baker, and Tipper Gore, the spouse of Al Gore. The PMRC sought to restrict children's access to music with violent or sexual themes. Its plan was to persuade the recording industry to implement a voluntary rating system for music and recordings, similar to the one used by the Motion Picture Association.
