    African Americans migrated to the North to find jobs and a better life. Slavery was in the south so they hoped for more opportunity and get away from the racial contact. This relates to the modernist idea of inner strength and doing what will be best for them.

    National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded. This was furthering civil rights and and fighting for social justice. The modernistic idea of writing relatively comes about.

    Thousands of African Americans march down fifth avenue. They were protesting lynching and other racial activity towards black people. President Wilson did not do much and discrimination continued.

    Hubert Harrison: Part I (The Voice of Harlem Radicalism) This was founded by Hubert Harrison. It was the first newspaper and first organization in the "New Negro Movement". This lead to more recognition and opportunities for the African Americans.

    The dancing became what would have been scandalist. The ladies dresses were showing off their legs, their clevage would show and they would have almost no sleeve. This is breaking away from the normality and becoming confident in yourself.

    Jazz was a sound and music created by Americans. We did not take the idea from other countries. African Americans created new instruments including the saxaphone and trumpet. This was moving away from what was the norm to be themselves.

    W.E.B Du Bois who was the cofounder NAACP would also help create the civil rights movement. It was about the African American culture and life. This time period is about being able to reach the final step, freedom.
