    General Burnside attacks Lee's troops and suffers 10,000 casualties.

  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Lincoln announces that in 1863, all slaves in rebelling states would be free.

  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Deadliest battle in history. After three days of fighting Lee finally retreated. The total number of casualties was 23,000 for the Union and 28,000 for Confederates.
