  • Introduction: Birth

    Mike Krzyzewski grew up loving the game of basketball and still today is doing the same. His basketball career started while playing in Chicago's Catholic league and leading the league in scoring for two years. Then he continued to play at West Point. After his playing years were over, he began his coaching career as an assistant under his West Point coach Bob Knight. West Point then hired Coach K in 1975 ("Krzyzeswki, Mike").

    Coach K Hired by Duke
    This was a surprise hire to most people in the college basketball world, but this was the beginning of a soon to be long and prestigious career at Duke. Although, Coach K did not start his career well at Duke by having a record of 21-34 his first two seasons ("Krzyzeswki, Mike"). Even after a rough start the program stuck with Coach K and he soon made a name for himself in the years to come.

    Unveiling of "Coach K Court"
    The floor at Cameron Indoor Stadium, where Duke plays their home basketball games, was renamed "Coach K Court" in honor of Mike Krzyzewski after he won his 500th career game. The renaming of the court signified the love from the University and the respect Coach K had gained over his coaching career at Duke.

    Leading with the Heart Published
    Coach K wrote this book through his collected knowledge from coaching so many years. The advice given is for everyone because it gives values that can help beyond the basketball court and into life situations. Mike stated in the book that, “In order to be a winner, you have to look for ways of getting things done and not for reasons why things can’t be done. People who live with excuses have things that can’t be done hovering around them all the time" (Mike Krzyzewski).

    USA Wins Gold in FIBA Championship
    Coach K's success has not just come on the college level, but also at the National level with USA Basketball. He has won the Olympic Gold Medal, 2008 and 2012, and World Championship Gold medal in 2010 and most recently in 2014. Coach K's ability to reconnect with former players on the national level is a big factor to success. Another factor, is the coaching style that he has that so many professional players love to play along with as well.
  • Duke Wins 5th National Title Under Coach K

    Duke Wins 5th National Title Under Coach K
    This year, 2015, back in April, marked yet another Coach K accomplishment. Coach K led his Duke basketball team back to the national championship game, the biggest stage in college basketball, to win his 5th national title. This title put Coach K in a class of his own by now owning the second most national championships by a college basketball coach. The season that led to the national title also saw Coach K win his 1,000th career game, the first division I men's basketball coach to do so.
