After Maya was found out to be raped by Mr. Freeman, he stands by Maya and conforts her. After, he got the name of who raped her and they both cried together.

Bailey and Maya, after spending time with their parents, are put on a train to return back to Stamps. This was a really hard time for Bailey because he loved his mother and never wanted to leave her.

Bailey comes back home very late at night to the point that momma and maya go out searching for him. He came home late because he was desired to watch a move he has already watched a second time. His punichment afterwards was a whipping. The reason he came home late was because he fell in love with a white woman who looked like his mom in the theater. "If he couldn't talk to me it must have been serious. But there was no air of spent revelry about him. He just seemed sad" (17.34).

Bailey starts playing sexual games with girls. He makes a tent from a blanket and has Maya stand outside to stand guard of any adualts.

Bailey has been having sexaul games for a while and now finally finds a girl that he's crushed on. They both stick around eachother and also play sexual games.
-To show how close Bailey felt towards Joyce, Maya said this: "For him, she was the mother who let him get as close as he dreamed, the sister who wasn't moody and withdrawing, and teary and tender-hearted." (21.24) -
Joyce brakes up with Bailey and runs away with another man to Dallas. Bailey eventually gets over it, but learns the feeling of a broken heart.

After Bailey's incident with the dead body, momma plans to send Bailey and Maya back to their parents to live with them.
