Sinking of the USS Maine
The sinking of the USS maine united the American people against Spain. Spain was seen as treacherous and barbarious. The song by Mary Elizabeth Lamb helped further this feeling by calling for vengeance: "Awake! it is no dream; Dost hear the sailors scream? Comrades will you go? Avenge the cruel blow!"
This represents future 2 because The United States is declaring war on Spain and invading Cuba as a direct response to an attack on our assets. -
Mckinley
The Mckinley address gives the United States reasons as to why to invade Cuba. It relates to future 2 because the US wants Cuba's resources for ourselves. -
Teller
The teller address states that the US has a major responsibility to get involved and free the people of cuba. This relates to future one because this means the US has to spread democracy to Cuba. -
Platt
The Platt treaty places specific restrictions on which Cuba's government must abide to. This relates the Future 2 because the restrictions seem to benefit the US rather than Cuba. -
Declaration of Neutrality
"The United States must be neutral in fact, as well as in name, during these days that are to try men's souls."
Future 4, isolating from the world. -
Wilson's First Warning to Germany
"the Government of the United States would be constrained to hold the Imperial Government of Germany to a strict accountability for such acts of their naval authorities, and to take any steps it might be necessary to take to safeguard American lives and property"
Future 2, protecting our own resources and assets. -
Peace Without Victory
"Victory would mean peace forced upon the loser, a victor's terms imposed upon the vanquished. It would be accepted in humiliation, under duress, at an intolerable sacrifice, and would leave a sting, a resentment, a bitter memory upon which terms of peace would rest, not permanently, but only as upon quicksand."
Future 3, we use international systems in order to make sure the loser does not have resentment and does not create another/more conflicts in the future. -
Wilson's' War message to congress
Wilson's address states that he intends to declare war on Germany if congress agrees.
"that it formally accept the status of belligerent which has thus been thrust upon it, and that it take immediate steps not only to put the country in a more thorough state of defense but also to exert all its power and employ all its resources to bring the Government of the German Empire to terms and end the war. "
This is future 1 because he mentions how he must put the awful government of Germany. -
Wilson's 14 Points (Future 3)
Wilson mentions creating a system in which other countries come together inorder to preserve peace.
"XIV. A general association of nations must be formed under specific covenants for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike."
This is Future 3 because it is using an international system to preserve peace -
Wilson's 14 Points (Future 1)
Wilson states various points on what he wants the after effecrts of the war to be. In this specific quote, Wilson believes that the US must give peace to all nations.
"All the peoples of the world are in effect partners in this interest, and for our own part we see very clearly that unless justice be done to others it will not be done to us."
This is future 1 because it describes that the US must serve justice to other countries -
Covenant of the League of Nations
This article states the rules and expectations of the members of the League of Nations.
"The action of the League under this Covenant shall be effected through the instrumentality of an Assembly and of a Council, with a permanent Secretariat. "
This is future 3 because the US is involved in an international system in which they can all tackle international problems together. -
Cabot's Arguement Against the League of Nations
Cabot states that the US is endangering itself and taking too much responsibility by joining the League of Nations.
"The United States is the world's best hope, but if you fetter her in the interest through quarrels of other nations, if you tangle her in the intrigues of Europe, you will destroy her powerful good, and endanger her very existence."
This is future 4 because Cabot wants to retract from Europe and focus on the US stronger in order to control the world that way. -
HUAC is founded
The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was created in 1938 to investigate private citizens and employees of suspected communistic behavior.
This is future 3 because by using this organization we are ridding the world of all communism. -
Fireside Chat
Roosevelt is basically saying that the US should not become involved in World War 2 and should staty neutral.
"And I trust that in the days to come our neurtrality can be made a true neutrality."
This is future 4 because the US wants to stay isolated in this conflicted. -
FDR Lend Lease
FDR is stating that dictatorships aim to destroy democracy, and so the United States must fight to defend democracy.
"The enemies of democracy were wrong in their calculations for a very simple reason. They were wrong because they believed that democracy could not adjust itself to the terrible reality of a world at war."
This represents future 1, because the US now must go out and spread democracy by fighting and destroying dictatorships. -
Roosevelt Delcaration of War
Roosevelt is delcaring war on Japan after a premediated attack on Pearl Harbor Hawaii.
"No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. "
This is future 2 because it states how we must defend ourselves and our assets. -
UN is created
The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation.
This represents future 3 because the US is using an international organization to solve world problems. -
Truman Doctrine
With the Truman Doctrine, President Harry S. Truman established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from unwanted outside or inside influences.
This is future 1 because the US is helping to spread democracy and fight off dictators. -
US Joins NATO
In 1949,the expansion of communism prompted the United States and 11 other nations to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
This reflects future 3 because the US is using a international organization to help the world's problems.
