Brought Into the World
Nic was born at dawn at a hospital in Berkely. After his birth,David and Vicki were engulfed in his presence; listening to the same songs over and over for him, forsaking sleep to answer his cries at night. -
Broken Family
David and Vicki decide to break off the marriage and get a divorce which is a huge hit on Nic. Vicki moves to Los Angeles and David remains in Berkely, making the "yo-yo joint-custody" hard to do. They both hire lawyers and get the opinon of a child psychologist who chooses that Nic is to live with David. As of now, Nic has two homes, two families, and two seperate parents. -
New Mom
Karen and David get married on an evening in May at her parent's house. Nic is the ring bear and although he is only nine, he expected a difference. There was no difference however other then the fact that he had a "new" mom. -
New Addition to the Family
Jasper is born in early December and when Nic sees him, he is intreged and fascinated by him. David and Karen talk to Nic and reassure him about the new baby. -
The Problem Begins
David finds a bag of marijuana in Nic's bag while packing a bag for him to have sleepover at a friend's house. David calls Nic and his friend over to dicuss it with them, hearing Nic explain that everyone does it and it was just one time. Upn further discussion, David finds out Nic had tried alcohol on a skiing trip. -
Another Addition to th Family
Daisy is born by C-section at six in the hospital. Nic and Jasper help bathe, dress, and carry her to the nursery. Nic says "I never thought I would have a family like this." when looking at Daisy. -
Should have nipped it in the bud
Karen and David drive to school in early May only to find out that he had bought marijuana outside the cafeteria. They take it that he made a mistake and should get help rather then punish him for it which ends up not stopping him later. -
David's Desperation to Connect
At David's parent's house Nic and David go on a walk around the block when Nic asks David if he would like to smoke some pot. Trying to figure out the reason behind the question, David takes the lighted joint and shares it with his son, finding it no different then a father and a son sharing a beer. -
The First Escape of Many
Just a few days before his 18th birthday, Nic disappears along with some money, wine, and food. It's two days before he calls, which is torture for David, who believes it is his fault that Nic left and started on drugs. -
Jail Time
While packing to go to the beach, two uniformed officers arrest Nic for being caught with marijuana. David bails him out and tells him it is the only time he will do it, figuring that being in jail will change his mind and teach him a lesson. -
The BIG One
After coming back from college, Nic lives back with his parents and the kids. He disappears once more but for four days this time until he finally calls David, who has been panicing and filled with worry. When David picks him up, his eyes are black holes, his skin pale and his body skinner, the reason, he soon finds out, is because he did meth. -
Drug Injections
Julia, one of Nic's girlfriends, calls to tell David that he had stolen needles from her mother. This now means he is injecting drugs rather then just swallowing them which could lead to heroin or something of that sort. His drug use and lies have been gotten worse, showing his downward spiral. -
Close Call
Nic was at a party last night and passed out, resulting in someone calling 911. The landlord saw the ambulence and called Vicki, who then had Nic's stepfather call David and tell him. He was in critical condition and on life support but he pulled through, checking out against doctor's orders. -
Family Troubles
As Nic's life seems to be getting better, David suddenly goes to th hospital for what he thinks is a brain hemorrhage. Nic flies home and stays by his dad's side after he is released from the hosital, only leaving when he sleeps. He spends time with the kids. -
Abandoment
Nic had dropped Z off at the market and said he would be back but he had been gone for four hours until Z got a cab home. Nic said he was merely going to break into his mom's house and steal her computer but that would've taken him 15 minutes. Vicki soon calls David and tells him Nic got into her garage to steal some things but he managed to lock himself in there.
