Benazir Bhutto was the first and only female to be prime minister for Pakistan. Benazir led the Pakistan People's Party. She was the eleventh prime minister elected. Bhutto was later exiled.

The Taliban, a faction of the majuhideen in Afghanistan, took control in Kabul. They had some very strict Islamic rules, but were seen as okay at that time. This marks when the Taliban first started taking control of different areas.

Maulana Fazlullah created radio stations in Swat that preached for Islamic law. These radio sations were illegal, and Fazlullah eventually allied with the Taliban.

The Taliban expanded their control across Swat, and they inforced Islamic law all across Swat. Violent attacks across Swat by Fazlullah are made to try and inforce these laws.

Benazir Bhutto was coming back to Pakistan to run in the election when she was killed. Bhutto was shot after giving a speech, and a suicide bomber also bombed her at the same time.

The Taliban had claimed that girls' schools were not needed, and that they should all be closed. They had made several radio shows saying that girls should stop going to school. This had affected a lot of people, and in January of 2009, schools had officially closed.

The Pakistan Government agreed to a peace accord with the Taliban that would allow Islamic law to be in place. In return, the government would receive a cease-fire. Since the Islamic law was in place for Swat, it basically put it under Taliban control.

The agreement was broken when Fazlullah started expanding his control. They take over Mingora, a yound public speaker's hometown, Malala Yousafzai. The Taliban also take over many more towns.

After the peace agreement broke down, the Taliban had begun to take over Swat. The Army wanted to put a stop to this, so they started a war to take back Swat. Thousands of people were forced to flee Mingora. In July of 2009, they stated that Taliban were cleared from Swat.

After speaking out about the problems in Pakistan, Malala was targeted by the Taliban. The Taliban shot Malala point blank in the head while she was on her way home from school. Malala survived, and she still speaks up for all of the people that need help.
