  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes
    John C. Calhoun served as a representative, secretary of war, Vice President, and ultimately, senator. As slavery was expanding into the newly acquired territory for Mexico. When Abraham Lincoln won the president election this triggered states wanting to secede from the union.
  • Confederation formed

    Confederation formed
    On February 9, 1861 Jefferson Davis who lived in Mississippi became the fist president of the confederacy. After leaving the senate of the U.S., Mississippi seceded from the union and the Confederacy Congress wanted Jefferson Davis to be the president. In Montgomery, Alabama Jefferson Davis was sworn in office. On April 2, 1865 Jefferson was imprisoned at Fort Monroe, Virgina for 2 years.

    At 4:30 Edmund Ruffin claimed to have fired the first shot at Fort Sumter. The first battle was the battle of bull run July 21, 1861. In northern Virginia the Battle of bull run took place. Irvin McDowell failed to flank the confederate troops and was forced to retreat leading to his defeat.

    General Irvin McDowell led the union to the first battle of Bull Run which led to victory. The battles of bull run were fought to have quick access to Richmond and led to a Confederacy defeat. On July 21, 1861 the Union attacked Fort Bull Run and Won.

    John L. Worden led the naval battle against the confederacy. The battle of Monitor and Merrimack took place after the south tried to get rid of the barricade the north put up. The battle of monitor and Merrimack ended March 9, 1862. It had a profound effect on morale that was near Hampton Roads
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
    The union won the battle of Shiloh which was important for the civil war. It allowed for Ulysses S. Grant to begin massive operations in the Mississippi Valley. The Battle of Shiloh ended in a United States Victory over the confederacy.
  • Battle of Antietam

    George McClellan's Army of the Potomac against General Robert E. Lee. 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. This one day battle way important in showing that the union could stand against the Confederacy
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    Slaves that were in the south benefited from the Emancipation Proclamation. It proclaimed that slaves under the 10 rebel states that were still in rebellion were to have freedom. On January 1, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln enforced the Emancipation Proclamation. The slave had acted to secure their own liberty.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    Siege of Vicksburg
    Ulysses S Grant and his army crossed the Mississippi River to attack Vicksburg. Grant failed to find a week spot form the north he then ordered a part of his army to cross the Mississippi River. On May 23-July 4, 1863 Grant was unable to capture Vicksburg so General Grant laid siege to the Confederate Army and city of Vicksburg. On 1863 the confederacy gave in and gave control of Vicksburg to the Union.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    Gorge G. Mead and his army was attacked by the confederate general Robert E. Lee. The union and the confederacy were both looking to capture a certain place in Gettysburg causing the three day war. The Gettysburg battle started July 1, 1863 - July 3 1863.
    The battle was a crushing defeat for the confederacy.
