    This was the first great war of the 20th century. The war grew out of the imperial ambitions of the Russian Empire and the Japanese Empire.The Russians were in search of a warm water port because theirs were only available in summer months then they froze when it became cold.

    WW1 involved all of the worlds "Great Powers" which involved Russia. The assassination of the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary was what started the war. By the end of the war the 4 major powers had been militarily and politically defeated.

    Russians formed the Soviet Union in WW2 due to the dissappointment of the WW1 outcome. Russian planned to take back land that they lost in WW1 by invading countries and taking over. The Soviets were led by Joseph Stalin.

    The Cold War was a non violent war between NATO and the Communist Soviet Union. Though there was no violence both sides had nuclear weapons which would of lead to mass destruction. The Cold war ended when Russia was in a poor financial state and with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

    Soviet invasion of Afganistan

    This was a nine year conflict during the Cold War when the US ambassador to Afganistan was kidnapped and killed by the Soviets. Similar to the Vietnam War this was an unpredictable warfare. This conflict was ended with the Soviet Union's Warsaw Pact.

    First Chechen War

    Russia attempted to sieze control of the mountianous region of Chechnya in December of 1994. Though the Russians showed more powerful weapons and support Chechens geurilla warfare set back Russian forces. This continued until a cease fire and the signing of a peace treaty in 1996.

    Russia sent troups back into Chechnya for the second time after the invasion of Dagestan. Russia's main goal was to regain control over this land.

    South Ossetia War

    Russia was attempting to regain the territory of Georgia. When they invaded they cleard cities and took over ports. Just after a week this intense warfare was over by a peace treaty that was signed in Moscow.
