  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    Battle of Fort Sumter
    At Fort Sumter, the unionists required supplies, so Lincoln sent supplies to them. The South became suspicious of it and began to attack, and Fort Sumter eventually surrendered on April 14, 1861. It was significant because it was the Civil War's first military action.
  • Merrimack Vs. Monitor

    Merrimack Vs. Monitor
    Ships needed more armor, so they plated the Merrimack with old iron railroad rails. The effect of this was that most of the boats that were wooden were defeated. Then the Monitor showed up the next day and they finally had a draw between them and the battle happened. Because that was the first fight with what is called ironclads and the last time wooden ships were used the battle between the two ships was significant.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    The battle began on the morning of September 17, 1862 when the Union army, under General Joseph Hooker, attacked the Confederate army on the left flank. Antietam enabled the Union to repel the first Confederate invasion of the North. The battle allowed Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. The significance was that now with the Emancipation Proclamation slaves were free.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    When they encountered a Union Cavalry on patrol, the Confederates were looking for supplies. A fight breaks out between the parties and victory is claimed by the Union because they had the high ground. It was important because it meant the north would never be invaded again by the south.
