They happened because the British commander in Boston had heard of supplies of powder and weapons being kept by Patriots in the towns of Lexington and Concord. On May 10, 1775, Benedict Arnold of Massachusetts joined Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont in a dawn attack on the fort, surprising and capturing the sleeping British garrison. George Washington defeated a formidable garrison Hessian mercenaries before withdrawing. When he returned to Trenton to lure British forces south, he executed a daring night march to capture Princeton. The victories reasserted American control of a lot of New Jersey and greatly improved the morale and unity of the colonial army and militias.

    The two Battles of Saratoga were a turning point in the American Revolution. On September 19, 1777, General John Burgoyne achieved a costly victory over American forces led by Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold. Burgoyne attacked the Americans again at Bemis Heights on October 7th but this time he was defeated and forced to retreat. He surrendered ten days later. The American victory convinced the French government to recognize the colonist's cause to enter the war as their ally. History.com

    The Siege of Charleston was a major engagement fought between March 29 to May 12, 1780 during the American Revolutionary War. The British shifted their focus to the American Southern Colonies. After the six weeks of siege, Major General Benjamin Lincoln, commanding the Charleston garrison, surrendered his forces to the British, resulting in one of the worst American defeats of the war.

    This is the final battle of the American Revolution. It was fought in Virginia as Britain had to begin to try to divide the Southern and Northern colonies. The Continental Army was led by George Washington. He had pushed the Forces of Cornwallis to the Atlantic where the French Navy had been pinning the commander of the British forces.
