    Lou is knocked unconscious when a he is hit by a pitch during a mid-season exhibition game. He would later go on that year to win the Triple Crown for leading the American League in home runs, RBIs, and batting average.

    Lou wins American League M.V.P. award for the second time in his career. In the end of the season, the Yankees beat the New York Giants in the World Series. This would be Lou's third, and final, World Series win.

    A.L.S. first manifests itself. This would lead Eleanor to ask him to retire from baseball, since A.L.S. is an incurable disease that over time causes complete paralysis of the voluntary muscles. However, he would not yet listen to her about retiring.

    Lou retires from the Yankees after listening to Eleanor, having played 2,130 consecutive games. This record would not be broken until 59 years later (1998), when Cal Ripken Jr. played 2,632 consecutive games.
  • Appreciation Day

    Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day is held at Yankee Stadium, two months after the retirement of the legend. This retirement was due to the A.L.S. Disease he had been diagnosed with.
