A little girl, Laura, and her family live in Wisconsin in the woods. She has two sisters, Mary and Carrie, and her ma and pa. Hunting season comes before winter and pa goes out to get some deer. They also slaughter their pig. At night, their pa tells them stories and shows them how to load a gun. At christmas, they make shapes with molasas and make snow angels with their cousins.

At the dance at grandpas, there was another little girl named laura and the two didnt get along very well. Lauras family went to town and visited the store. They also walked along the lake amd gather pebbles.

Pa was harvesting and used a machine that hepled get the straw easier. ma made straw hats. when pa went hunting, he didnt shoot the deer he saw because it was with the baby deer.
