Literary Experiences

  • Age 6

During this age, this is when I first remember getting my first library book from my elementary school's library. The book was apart of a series that was about a dog named Biscuit.
  • Age 7

At this point in elementary school I remember I started to be taken out during class to get extra help with reading and comprehension with other students and the school's reading specialist. I had extra help with reading until I was in 5th grade.
  • Age 9

When my sister and I became older, my grandparents would take us to Barnes and Noble. They would let us get a couple of books. This is important to me because I feel like it made me actually care about reading more and reading became more involved in reading.
  • Age 13

During 7th grade, I remember reading and analyzing "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. This short story really stood out to me because it was the first gothic reading I have ever read (especially in school).I first thought the story was really creepy and I also wasn't used to Poe's writing style because in school we never read literature that was considered dark.
  • Age 14

During the end of 8th grade, I remember being introduced to Shakespeare. The first play that we read was "Romeo and Juilet". This is important because it exposed me to a different writing style and language that I've never seen before in school. Plus, before then I had never read a romance before.
  • Age 14

Freshman year of high school I remember reading "To Kill a Mockingbird". This is significant to me because it made the class analyze and think about the racial injustices there were during the Civil Rights Movement era.
  • Age 15

During this time I was struggling with my mental health. I found one book I could relate to because they made me feel like I wasn't alone or different from everyone else. This book was called "It's Kind of a Funny Story".
  • Age 16

In junior year of high school, we had junior interviews. Junior interviews were supposed to help mimic what an actual job interview would be like. This is significant to me because it helped me talk more fluently.
  • Age 17

Senior year we read a lot of plays out loud to the class. This helped me a lot with my reading fluently and comprehension. For example,I learned to project my voice when reading.
  • Age 20

This is a big significant change in my reading, I started to read books that were out of my typical genre range. Currently, I'm reading "The Exorcist". Reading this made me more aware of different reading languages and styles.
