My earliest memories of literacy were when my mother would read to me every night before bed and when I would be spoken too by family members or other friends.

My first reading experience that didn't involve just being read too, was when my mom and I sat down and she helped me sound out the words in a 5 page Winnie the Pooh story book.

From an early age I started to read rapidly. When I was in the first grade, myself and other student were pulled aside during reading time to work on books that were considered harder for our age and used for the 5th graders, I was in this extra classroom until I left elementary school.

When I was in elementary and middle school, I was a competitive figure skater. I learned small multiples through "turn blocks" which allowed me an easy way to multiply by 5 (one turn block is = 5 rotations)

In middle school we were able to gain volunteer hours and free books if we were apart of the schools "library club", in which you read a minimum one book per week and write a paper on what it was about.

In high school the English department had a "reading challenge" to motivate students, you were excused from classes for a month if you finished 100 books within a two month period. Myself and 6 other kids in the class completed the challenge.

In high school I was able to take sign language classes and it broadened my language skills as well as my literacy to see different forms of how people communicate.

My first semester of college I had to take a math course that changed my perspective of numbers, and literacy, by making me think about numbers and how the correlate in multiple different ways so that I would be able to show a student the different ways as well.
