  • Linus Benedict Torvalds was born in Helsinki

  • Torvalds bought his first computer

    He uses his savings to buy a Sinclair QL, one of the first 32-bit computers ever made
  • Enrolls at the University of Helsinki

    Just like his parents Torvalds attended the University of Helsinki and he chose to major in computer science
  • Torvalds takes his first class on C programming language

    This is the programming language that he later uses to write Linux
  • Linus buys his first IBM compatible computer

    This personal computer had a 4 MB of Memory and a 33MHz Intel 386 processor
  • Torvalds treis to obtain copy of UNIX

    However the cheapest copy was $5000 dollars and this is what made him try and create an alternate solution to his needs of a better computer software.
  • Linus decides to create his own version of UNIX and MINX

    in Finland education is free and he didnt feel the need to graduate in 4 years so he changed course and spent all his time developing his software
  • Linux was invented

  • first crude version of LINUX is completed

  • first offical version of LINUX is completed for public use

  • Linus moves to Santa Clara Califonia

    In Silicon Valley, he accepts a position with Transmeta Corporation. His job there was to help develop commercial software to facilitate communication between operating systems and that company's microprocessors.
  • Microsoft begins to consider LINUX a threat

    Oracle, Intel, Netscape, Corel and others announced plans to support Linux as an inexpensive alternative to Microsoft Windows.
  • IBM delegates 1 billion dollars to LINUX research

  • LINUX is becoming a low cost option for PC users

    Linux is finally reaching the point where it is suitable for use as a low cost alternative on the desktop and notebook computers of ordinary people who have little understanding of (or interest in) computers but who need them for their work and/or leisure activities.
  • Torvalds works on Linux kernel full-time for Open Source Development Lab

    This company was founded in 2000 and is the central body incrarge of running Linux it is funded by many companies like IBM
